The president repeated his deranged threats against Greenland and Denmark today:
President Trump said on Wednesday that “anything less than” getting Greenland would be “unacceptable,” hours before the first meeting between the governments of Greenland, Denmark and the United States since he escalated his push to buy or get the semiautonomous Danish territory.
The “push to buy or get” Greenland is a euphemistic way to describe naked coercion and aggression. No one on the other side wants to sell, least of all the people who live in Greenland. There is no other legitimate way to “get” the island. To “get” it against the wishes of the inhabitants means stealing it by force and illegally occupying someone else’s land.
Trump is giving Greenland and Denmark an ultimatum. Saying that anything less than U.S. ownership is “unacceptable” is a threat to take their territory from them by any means. Offering to buy someone else’s land when they have repeatedly said it isn’t for sale carries with it the threat of punishment if they don’t make a deal. It is international gangsterism.
